Tulsa Habitat Lady Builders at It Again

Hammers swinging, saws whirring, walls going up ... it's a Habitat for Humanity crew on the job, but this one's a little different. Another look and you see that every hammer, every saw, every two-by-four is in the hands of a woman.

In 1997, the year of Tulsa's 100th birthday, Tulsa Habitat women were making some history of their own. At a February reception, when Tulsa women were alerted to the possibilities of building the first Habitat house in Oklahoma to be built only by women, more than 100 volunteers signed up.

In March, Women's History Month, the work began and the women saw the house through to completion. By the time the house was completed, 250 Lady Builders had built the first "Women Build" home in Oklahoma. Since then, two more Women Build's have been completed, about one every other year.

In September 2006 Lady Builders with Lowe's and Wells Fargo built houses VI & VII simultaneously in memory of two Lady Builders who lost their battle with cancer in 2004. Currently Lady Builders are raising funds for house VIII to start in 2008.

Working in the Woodshop, the women have also built items for Habitat fund-raising auctions, and have participated in local parades.
